About Ethanol  12/11/09 11:16:00 AM

Corn is the most widely used material for ethanol production. Currently, there are four ethanol plants  in the Texas Panhandle, three of which are already operating - the fourth plant is scheduled to be online by the end of 2008. Upon the completion of the fourth plant, Texas will annually produce approximately 355 million gallons of ethanol. Today there are over 110 ethanol plants in the U.S.

Ethanol is blended into almost 50% of the U.S. fuel supply, mostly as E10 and E85, and can replace gasoline that requires the use of 600,000 barrels of oil each day.

On December 19, 2007, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 was signed into law, establishing a Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) of 36 billion gallons in 2022, and further reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
